A tinnitus evaluation includes a Comprehensive Audiological Exam along with specialized loudness and pitch matching testing. The provider will likely ask you detailed medical questions related to balance, taste and facial sensation which may seem unrelated, but are important. He will also ask about past noise exposure, including military service. He will ask about how often the tinnitus occurs, how long it lasts, if it seems to be more in one ear or both and how bothersome it is for you. The provider will then discuss the likely cause of the tinnitus and the best course of action to take next.
Tinnitus is a medical term for noises in the ear or ears that others cannot hear. Some describe these sounds as ringing, buzzing, hissing or humming or even like crickets or cicadas. Many people experience brief episodes of ringing tinnitus, while others can be overwhelmed with constant loud, intrusive noise.
